Are you depressed or are you burnt out?
Because those two, the symptoms for both of those are very similar.
We think of people who are depressed as people who are intensely melancholic or sad and just pretty much want to hang about the couch all day. And that's not true!
I see a lot of women who are depressed and they're actually anxious, so they have a lot of internal restlessness. They can't sleep, they have a lot of insomnia. They're normally very productive and always on the go and they can feel irritable.
All of those symptoms which we probably wouldn't relate to as depression but are symptoms of depression.
Symptoms of burnout are the same but the treatment that you'll be offered will be very different. So if you go to a doctor with those symptoms most likely you will prescribed anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication.
If what is going on for you is underlying burnout, the medication won't have a big impact on your mental health or quality of your life.
The reason being is even though we look at depression as a chemical deficiency in the brain what we're finding now through multitudes of studies is that poor gut health is linked with depression and the reason is because our gut is seen as our second brain.
We have over 70% of our immune system just around our gut lining and what that means is that when our gut integrity is comprised it alerts the immune system, and the immune system starts to trigger lots of inflammation. That inflammation becomes systemic and also inflames the brain.
They've actually found this even in studies where they've been able to induce depressive symptoms through triggering inflammation. So they took healthy individuals who had no signs of depression and then actually injected them with a substance which would trigger inflammation in the body. And it brought about depressive symptoms in those patients.
There's a big link with inflammation, gut health, and depression.
If this you, if you're feeling anxious, irritable, tired but wired, can't concentrate, you're forgetful, you can't sleep, all that kind of stuff I'm going to be talking more about that in this week's advanced training. It's free to join.
I'm going to walk through the steps of what you need to do in order to correct key systems in the body to reduce inflammation, get your energy back, elevate your mood, and also repair any metabolic issues that you may have – like unexplained weight gain.
