Years ago a graduate student earning her Ph.D made one the most influential discoveries of the 20th century in neuroscience, the body's opiate receptor, from here she was known as the endorphin doctor.
She went on to rub shoulders with some big wigs and become chief of brain chemistry at the institute of Mental Health in Washington. It was here she expanded her research on emotions and began to study the body-mind connection.
Her name was Dr Candace Pert, and she wrote a tonne of information about how our body is a reflection of our mind. Our subconscious mind.
She found this connection exists because of certain neuropeptides (kind of a protein) that connects the brain to every cell in the body. As she puts it…
Every cell in our body is literally having a conversation!
So much emotional information is being exchanged throughout the body and brain, most of which we never even realise consciously. What is going on in the subconscious mind is being played out by our body (and life!). We live 90-95% of our lives from our subconscious mind, which also run our habits and behaviours.
Her work was made into a book called molecules of emotions, and she made a massive contribution to the field of mind-body medicine.
What does this mean for you?
When I started in practice and was feeling more and more unwell (share my story here), it never occurred to me to look at what was going on in my head! I thought the less time I spent poking around in there the better! But little did I realise my body and life were giving it ALL away….
The more I discovered how much the mind influences health, the more it made sense to spend time looking at mental wellbeing as one of our healing agents.
We are not separate from our thoughts. In fact, the phenomenon of placebo effect show us that our thoughts can have more influence over our body than medicine!
I've seen people who suffer constipation are holding onto too much in their life, they can't let go and it's reflected in the body.
Those who suffer migraines regularly are so often overwhelmed with stress and worry that the brain just slams on the brakes.
A recent client who had unexplained infertility for 2 years, when she released suppressed emotions from her childhood, the next phone I got was to tell me she was pregnant!!
…Mind and body are NOT separate
If you're constantly tired, then your life force is blocked, and it's the mind can turn this energy on or off. It's not just the glucose we have in our muscles that gives us bounce, but the life force that governs our body is a mighty power of it's own.
If you're stressed or anxious and it's having a ripple effect on your relationships, career, or just plain ole sucking the fun out of life – then instead of searching for a ‘magic pill' (that never delivers the magic!), then check in with yourself, and if you can't assess your thoughts then look at your life.
Change is always possible, I think the real burden is believing there is nothing we can do about it.
If you want to know more about this, how to unlock the body's life force and re-find your bounce again. I'm talking about this EXACT thing on Wednesday's live online workshop. “Why Are You So tired?”.
