Years ago in my practice, I offered a ketogenic program for my clients. They lost a lot of weight, the biggest loss was 50kgs. Incredible results!
The success of this keto program was inspiring, people regained their health and confidence.
When I struggled with my weight during my burnout years, of course, I put myself on this keto program.
The problem was, I couldn't follow through with it.
I felt so hungry and tired all the time, and my cravings for carbohydrates like rice or potatoes, were over-powering. My body couldn't switch fuel sources, from glucose to fat, so I struggled with these symptoms. This was mainly because I was stressed and exhausted.
Even though my clients lost tonnes of weight, they regained almost all of it when I saw them a year later.
It was heartbreaking. All that hard work, wasted.
I realised that keto has a dark side: carbohydrate resistance and rebound weight gain.
It's hard to spend the rest of your life avoiding carbohydrates and for some (like me) it took a long time for my body to switch to burning body fat for fuel.
Women with thyroid imbalances will notice that low-carb does not feel good.
I'm not saying that ketogenic diets are bad, I still use them for some clients today (done differently). But if you struggle to do low-carb or lose weight, then it's not the best solution for you right now.
