“I spent 9 years telling my doctors that I felt bad, that I could not concentrate and do simple tasks at my job. The doctor would do basic tests, say I was fine, and come back in 6 months if nothing has improved“.
That is a story I've heard many times from my female patients.
Brain fog is just one example of how doctors are failing women.
“Don't forget dinner with your grandma tonight”
“I won't forget” she will say, then later would completely forget to join the rest of the family for dinner.
Or being offered a 60 days trial period (probational) employment, then struggling to keep the job as she cannot focus and manage complex tasks. Only to feel she will never have the financial resources to escape her toxic relationship.
Or Carolyn who wasn't able to take more on in her work because she was bone-tired, got stressed easily and had brain fog. She was seeing a doctor for 11 years with no relief.
Brian fog, exhaustion, lack of energy, irritability, anxiety, and bloating are among many medical conditions that doctors fail to help women. And here is why:
1) Doctors are trained to wait until things are bad enough to treat the symptoms with a drug or a surgical treatment.
2) To quote Doctor Anthony Kaveh, who studied at Stanford and Harvard: we are good at treating someone with a broken leg.
We meet the patient for 10 min and give them something to hide the symptoms.
We hardly do any preventative medicine and never spend 50 min giving lifestyle advice that one needs to improve their health.
3) During a 10-minute consult, doctors will look at blood test results and compare them against the population's average (it's what they call the normal range)
The problem is that many are sick, overweight, eating unhealthy, and chronically ill in our population.
If the Doctor sees no disease or a drug that they can prescribe, they'll send the patient home while ignoring the symptoms they are experiencing.
In other words: “I compared your blood results to the average unhealthy population, and you are not much worse than the average, so go home”.
4) Western medicine ignores the power of the body to heal itself and how to help the body heal.
That is why it took me years to learn how to get rid of the severe exhaustion I felt in my 20s.
It is also why many of my patients who suffered for years from exhaustion, insomnia, anxiety, weight gain, and irritability will say: “After struggling for years with doctors, I finally feel better.”
I needed to ask for the blood tests I wanted and interpret them myself.
Let me give you an example.
Doctors will check for triglycerides (a type of fat) range in our blood.
With $647.7 billion spent globally on fast food in 2019, comparing triglycerides to the average range is like saying: “you're in bad shape, but not as bad as the average”.
Your triglyceride level could be lower than the average and you could still be in poor metabolic health and at risk of heart disease.
Also, very low triglycerides level can indicate you are not consuming enough healthy fats, leading to poor brain function, hormone imbalances, hair loss, and a weaker immune system.
