I'm hosting a new webinar tomorrow on how to soothe anxiety without quitting your job or having to meditate with monks! (sign up here).
I've chosen this topic because I see so many women suffer with anxiety and because I'm more than qualified to talk about it…having struggled with this for a big portion of my life and tried every trick in the book to overcome it.
Anxiety is about worry or dread about the future or reliving the past, never the present. Anxiety is your imagination running away on you, where you overestimate a likely bad outcome. It's a coping mechanism.
Even if we feel anxiety about a situation happening in real time, our thoughts are always projected into the future – what impact it will have tomorrow, next year, on work, family, friends etc ….not about the situation right in front on you.
Heard a funny story about this the other day
…………
A traveler is driving just outside the city, when his car runs out of fuel & breaks down. Luckily he remembers that he passed a service station not so long back where he could pick up fuel.
He starts walking and has this sinking feeling in his stomach, saying to himself, oh this is the city, it's supposed to be an inhospitable place, as he walks towards the station he really gets into what he's likely to experience.
Thinking, they'll probably want cash deposit for the fuel, not cheque or credit, damn, they'll probably want about $100 deposit.
Saying to himself, I just wish people weren't like that, that people were just friendly, where I come from it's a small friendly place, people are so nice, it's just a shame that I have to put up with all this inhospitality.
He continues to walk along and think to himself, oh no, I can really see some problems here! He knows I'm from out of town so whose to say he'll give me my deposit money back! I might end up getting ripped off. The more he thinks to himself, the more agitated and upset he becomes.
Then his mind starts thinking about the consequence about going back, and that maybe he'll have to sue the person, who knows if he'll even give him the canister of fuel, thinking it's terrible that people even do these things to each other, how they take advantage of people in a vulnerable position.
By the time he gets to the petrol station, he's worked himself up into a state.
The attendant comes over to him and asks “can I help you sir” and he says, “yeah take this” and he decks the guy!
…………..
It's a funny story, but I think we can all relate to it. Our thoughts can create a real sensory experience and you feel like it's actually happening. And your body triggers all sorts of hormones (stress hormones) in order to protect you from your situation.
Anxiety: Big Picture
Anxiety is not always panic attacks, most people I see have generalised anxiety.
It feels like your body is in a permanent rush!
Your thoughts are all over the place, you may even feel shaky, irritable and snap at people at work or with your kids. Your muscles always feel tight and twitchy, you find it hard to fall asleep, and there's a feeling of inner pressure or nervousness, like adrenalin.
You struggle to concentrate, try to do a million things at once (and finish none), and you're always busy.
You end up making mistakes at work, forget important tasks or events, and possibly rely on alcohol, meds or other to keep you chilled and able to catch up with yourself.
Sounds familiar right?!
As you go further up the anxiety ladder, there is OCD, phobias, and panic attacks.
Anxiety is associated with a chronically overactive stress-response, and increases our risk of developing a plethora of illnesses.
Anxiety brings friends (not nice ones), such as weight gain, mood changes, depression, binge eating, digestive problems, insomnia, early ageing, exhaustion, burnout, hormonal problems including thyroid, and female reproductive issues.
Enough said!
Getting anxiety soothed and sorted is obviously really important, not just so you can prevent the complications to your body & longevity, but so you can enjoy your work, partner, kids….LIFE!!!
