There’s a huge difference between the number of tasks we have to complete on a daily basis and the overwhelm that comes from our daily responsibilities.
One is easily manageable, the other is not.
If you’re feeling stretched too thin and exhausted at the end of the day, chances are you’re struggling with mental load and NOT just a packed schedule.
In very simple terms, your task load is your actual to-do list. It’s what you see on your calendar – meetings, projects, errands, and responsibilities.
Mental load is what’s happening in your head – the chronic overthinking, replaying everything you need to do, worrying about what could go wrong, and dwelling on every little detail.
👉 This overthinking is what truly drains your energy and can build up into chronic stress.
The tricky part is that this mental load builds up over years, not just days or weeks. But the symptoms tend to sneak up on us.
Here are some common warning signs to watch out for:
Most women think they just have too much on their plate, but the difference between a too busy life and being in mental overload lies in how you feel on a daily basis.
👉 If you feel like everything is urgent, or you’re overstretched, frazzled, and burnt out, this points to a high mental load.
And yes, some of that can be caused by an overloaded schedule, but from my experience working with women daily, they often handle a busy schedule better when we address the chronic stress beneath it.
Many people ask, “How do I change my thinking?” or “How do I stop overthinking?” But trying to THINK your way out of overthinking is just going to add to your mental load and make the problem worse.
We want to REDUCE the load.
So how do you change how you think? The short answer is: you don’t.
Here’s what you can do to reduce the load 👇
You already have the ability to dismiss certain thinking.
For example, I remember living in a really noisy part of the city with train tracks right behind my apartment and a highway out front. When I first moved in, I thought, “How am I ever going to sleep through this?” But within a few nights, I barely noticed the noise, and it didn’t bother me anymore.
My mind just dismissed the background noise.
So, our minds are incredibly good at filtering out what’s unhelpful – we just need to trust it and stop holding onto every thought.
👉 You can do this by recognizing when you’re stuck in a noisy thinking and allowing the thoughts to pass without trying to fix or change them. Once we can do this our mind will naturally equalize because it knows we make better decisions, navigate challenges with ease, and feel calmer from this state.
We’re never going to get rid of negative thinking completely but we can definitely learn to not let it consume us – this will allow new ideas and opportunities to come through for us.
