Intermittent fasting, it is for everyone and what about if you have adrenal fatigue?
So this is one of the questions I get asked all the time, particularly in my community, is intermittent fasting a good thing? And I'm a big fan of intermittent fasting, but not for people with adrenal fatigue.
So if you noticed you've been doing intermittent fasting and you feel more tired, irritable, it's harder to get through the day, perhaps you have more cravings or binge eating at night, then this could be a reason.
Because with adrenal fatigue, which comes about due to chronic stress, it disrupts our hormones, and often with adrenal fatigue we have reactive hypoglycaemia. So we need to eat frequent meals in order to overcome that, in order to heal the hypoglycaemia and also adrenal fatigue.
Secondly, what's also important that when we're fasting, we're restricting our calories. We could be restricting it to up to 500 calories a day, so that means that we are not getting the micronutrients that we need. The vitamins and the minerals that we need to repair key systems in the body and to also get the energy from our food.
If you're feeling impatient going through the day, more tired as you're getting through your work and not able to exercise, et cetera, then this could be definitely a factor.
We need more nutrients in the diet to help the repair the hormonal imbalances which are caused by adrenal fatigue.
The third key thing is that we need to repair key systems when we're in adrenal fatigue, so we need really good, quality food and nutrients for that. To repair liver detox pathways, repair the gut, and we need to repair stress hormone levels and our thyroid hormones.
All of these things are dependent on certain nutrients like magnesium, B6, zinc, selenium, et cetera. So if we're fasting, we're not going be getting enough of those.
