That's what my friend said the other day when talking about her new gym program…
It's not uncommon to gain a couple of kilos in winter, you may find yourself wanting more sleep, feel less active, and have more nights curled up with a wine and stodgy meals. I see it as semi-hibernation time, we too have our cycles with the season, and winter is really a time for rest and rejuvenation.
But as we get closer to summer now, I've had a lot of clients looking to lose the winter weight…
I'm going to very honest here, I don't like weight loss diets! Why?
Because people usually follow some crazy calorie counting formula (which we should all know by now is a weight loss myth) and all it ever does is slow the metabolism down.
Some diets have rigid ideas about excluding certain food groups (“bad” ones apparently) like carbohydrates, making people carb resistant and likely to put the weight back on. Others are basically starvation disguised at detox and end up breaking the metabolism
Any weight loss program that has you hungry, excluding major food groups, and missing vital nutrition – will break your metabolism. Full Stop!
Not only that, cutting out nutrients is only going to have you running straight to Koko Black for a sugar hit!
I've seen it over and over again. Heck I used to run a weight loss program in my clinic years ago called Ultra Lite. And it lived up to the name in every way, it made people ‘lite' and the food portions were Ultra lite! But the problem was, people rebounded afterwards because the diet was extremely low in carbohydrates, making people carb resistant once they came off.
The problem with chronic dieting is that it dampens your metabolism, your inner fire, and turns it down slowly overtime. The less you eat today, cools your metabolism, and the less you can eat tomorrow.
I recognise the reason why people can't lose weight is because their metabolism is broken.
Now I work to help heal your metabolism….not break it, starve it, or stomp on it.
Weight loss isn't an energy in/energy out formula, goodness, some people eat crappy McDonalds and stay thin – there's much more to it!
And it's not because you're getting older or you've had kids – rubbish!
Your metabolic burn rate influences what you do with your food! It's your metabolism that determines if your body is going to burn it or store it!
Hormonal changes that occur in the body due to a slow metabolism tell your brain that you're actually starving, so it triggers the appetite and cravings so you to eat more.
We live on food that has low nutrition, is loaded with chemicals, preservatives (don't get me started on “fat-free” food) and processing. We pump ourselves full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, eat foods with genetically modified ingredients (even in Australia), and dairy that's riddled with synthetic hormones!
Our soils are depleted, air polluted, we drink from plastic containers, our water has chemicals that most Europeans are scared to drink, and we live with overwhelming and crushing amounts of stress day after day.
It's not a wonder so many struggle to lose weight.
There are three key players: Adrenals, Liver and Thyroid!
These guys all work together to generate your energy production and metabolism.
When stressed our adrenals are activated, telling our body it's not safe to burn fat as fuel, but rather, keep storing fat for later. So now you have a metabolism that will even store lettuce as fat! And I'm talking about foods that place stress on your body, not just your work/kids/life! So you need foods in your diet that will help calm your adrenals, keeping your body burning fat for fuel.
Poor food choices, toxic build up, and harmful ingredients in food, slow down liver detoxification which allows toxins to accumulate in the tissues. Your body traps toxins in fat cells to keep it out of harms way, so more toxins = more fat cells. Nourishing the liver and removing dietary toxins stimulates detoxification, making your liver search your body for fat cells to burn.
Plus liver health is important to activate your Thyroid hormones.
Thyroid is the queen of your metabolism, it is our internal fire and the hormones it produces (T3, T4) are the heat. T3 is our active hormone and contributes to a super-fast metabolism.
The problem today, we produce too much of another hormone (Reverse T3) this blocks the active hormone and cools down our metabolism. This happens because of chronic stress, nutrient deficiencies and certain disease.
So it's important to use the right foods to stimulate the thyroid to produce the right hormones and keep your thyroid functioning, while also helping your body adapt to stress.
Yes! All of this is correctable!
When all key areas are working properly, your metabolism is totally fired up and burning food for fuel all day long…..you can eat cheese cake and your body will burn it off lickety split.
When you repair your metabolism, you won't rebound afterwards because you're internal fire is burning strong! Your metabolism will keep your weight in check.
I know this may all sound overwhelming, which is why I pull it together for my clients, into a simple straight forward plan.
Once you know how your body and it's chemistry works, then the food you eat and lifestyle you choose should create energy for you, not fatigue, obesity, sickness and self-loathing.
But it's more than that..
This is more than just losing weight, your metabolism is in charge of energy production and building muscle, your marker of health and longevity i.e. it slows down the ageing process!
All life requires energy to survive, and the only way to acquire that energy is from consumption, metabolisation or transformation of food. So think of this as healing for the whole body, and a massive step towards a healthier & younger you!
