Mental well-being plays a huge role in our mood, productivity, and peak performance.
In fact, mental well-being is on a continuum with severe anxiety or depression on one end, and peak performance on the other.
Most people hover between burnout and stress, never reaching peak performance and operating from their highest potential.
Research has shown how certain hormones can affect your mental wellbeing. These hormones can be under or over-secreted, causing changes to your mood, productivity, and ability to handle stress.
These changes affect your ability to function successfully in your work.
Below are the top 5 hormones that can either help or hurt us as businesswomen, leaders, or entrepreneurs.
1. Cortisol – the stress hormone
Prolonged stress causes an overload of cortisol in the body, leading to high glucose levels, fatigue, anxiety, depression, headaches, and other mood disorders.
You can adjust cortisol through the 4 ways I wrote about yesterday Read here.
2. Sex hormones – Oestrogen, Progestorone, Testosterone
These hormones are also essential for our mental health.
Lower levels of these hormones can cause irritability, anxiety, and other conditions.
High stress lowers progesterone, our natural anti-anxiety hormone.
Reducing stress, improving detoxification channels, and restoring gut health all help to rebalance these hormones.
3. Insulin
The thyroid is responsible for the hormones T3 and T4 affecting our metabolism and mental health. Low thyroid function is often missed in pathology testing and can affect how we make decisions and is linked with anxiety, depression and brain fog. It can even affect sleep cycles.
Get a full thyroid panel test from your doctor or you can order it yourself online.
5. Neurotransmitters: Dopamine, Serotonin, GABA
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that influence our mood, fear, and pleasure. Even the smallest changes in these molecules have a profound effect on our behavior.
Serotonin influences our mood, and GABA produces a feeling of calm. Dopamine is linked to memory, planning, and pleasure.
A healthy, protein-rich diet can influence dopamine levels. Sunlight and exercise help with serotonin.
